SCENE 030

They finally found the place after a good deal of looking, deep into a storage district on the west side, near the docks. The building was the structural equivalent of a haemorrhage but although he couldn’t believe that it was as bad as it looked he knew he had gotten the right place from the unmistakable tag art already littering its outer walls.

There was nobody around but bags and empty spray cans were scattered before the open doorway, out of which the blare of hardcore punk emerged. Alicia stepped out of the car and went to Auguste’s side.

“My god. This is the place?”

“This is it.”

“You couldn’t hold a fucking kickboxing fight in there, never mind an art exhibition.”

“That is my concern.”

“We’re going to move it?”

“I’m not sure. I’ve cleared one of my smaller buildings for her but she’s already begun work on this place and she’s too damned stubborn to accept that kind of help anyway. Whatever I do to help her I can’t let it look like as if I’m doing so. She has to feel like she is doing this on her own.”

“Seems to me things would be a whole lot easier if she just accepted that you have more resources than she does and made good use of them.”

“Easier, yes. But you’ve met Camille, right?”

Alicia nodded in acceptance of the point. “Fucking punk music. I fucking hate fucking punk music.”

She curled a lock of blonde hair behind her ear and slipped on a pair of shades. “You’re going to wait here?”

“I’d better not be seen. I just want you to take a little look around, see what you can come up with. Anything that can make this better for her. This is important to her, so it’s important to me too.”

“Do they know that I’m coming?”

“I asked her if it would be okay if you could drop in some time because you were working nearby. She wasn’t particularly keen but . . . ”

“ . . . I’ll bet . . . ”

“ . . . but she agreed. So keep it in check, okay? I’ll circle the block a few times and come back for you.”

Alicia smiled slyly, then started off towards the building.

Auguste was back in the car before she disappeared through the open door. The vehicle was slotted behind a old dumpster but there was no point in taking the risk of Camille finding him there. She knew that Alicia might drop by but he’d had to convince her it was entirely casual and if she suspected there was anything more organised to it he knew exactly how she would react.

He started the engine and jumped when a figure suddenly appeared in front of him. It blocked out the sun and for a moment it looked like a SWAT officer because of the odd device fitted to its face but he quickly realised it was an aerosol mask.

The figure remained where it was, looming before Auguste, until he killed the engine. The passenger door opened and the other man climbed in.
